Chapter Nine

When the taxi pulled up at Trent’s apartment

building, he shoved money at the driver and climbed out

numbly, not hanging around to get his change or

thinking of anything but getting inside. He climbed the

stairs and let himself in, locking the door behind him as

if he could lock out the world.

The nice shoes came off, the nice coat, and he folded

things across the back of his kitchen chair. He pulled

down a highball glass from the cabinet and poured an

enormous whiskey on the rocks. He left his clothes in the

kitchen and carried the bottle of Jameson with him to the

bedroom.

He changed into his Superman pajamas, the same

faded, threadbare ones he’d had since he was in high

school. They were too snug now, not just from shrinking

in dozens of washes, but from the bulk he’d added over

his decade of fighting fires. Still, comfortable or not, they

comforted him. His mom had bought them for him, and

wearing them was the closest thing he could get to a hug

from her now.

After curling up in bed to nurse his drink, Trent put

his phone on the nightstand and stared at it. He could

call, he knew. He could talk to Julia, ask her to forgive

him. He could propose, maybe, if he was desperate. Was

he desperate?

Above everything else, he needed to talk to Julian.

Julian might not want to talk to him, though. Julia

had said he could call anytime, but then Julia might be a

liar. He didn’t trust her like he trusted Julian.

Mulling it over, he finished his drink and fell

asleep.

In the morning around eleven he finally woke up,

but he couldn’t make himself travel farther than to the

bathroom for a piss before he turned right back around

and crawled back under the covers. Sipping whiskey

straight from the bottle, Trent rubbed the sleep from his

eyes, dialed the Larsons’ number, and hoped to God that

Julian wanted to talk to him.

Julian picked up on the second ring.

“Trent? Are you all right?” His voice sounded thick.

Trent hoped he hadn’t hurt the man’s pretty nose. He

couldn’t remember now.

“Do you hate me, Julian? If you hate me, just hang

up and I’ll never call again, but if you still like me even a

little, I need you.” Trent’s voice cracked, and he wrestled

it under control before he continued. “You don’t have to

come. But I have good liquor and a big TV, and if you

come over, I’ll order pizza. I owe you pizza, right?”

There was a moment of silence followed by a sniff.

“Trent, I will never hate you. I know you don’t know me

very well, but once someone’s in with me, there’s no way

out. Okay? You’re kinda trapped. So tell me where you

are, and I’ll put on some pants and be right there.”

Trent heard a shuffling on the other end, like

Julian was up and moving.

“If you buy me pizza does that mean I have to rub

your feet?” Julian laughed thickly, but laughing was

good. “Directions, please.”

Trent was so relieved he couldn’t help laughing too.

He gave Julian the address and hung up before Julian

could change his mind. He couldn’t banter right now.

With borrowed strength to leap out of bed, Trent

rushed to the sink to brush his teeth and wash his face.
